The first factor in how safe a heater that is ventless is the gas you use for it.
Unvented gas heaters safe. Lp gas listed vented room heaters equipped with a 100 percent safety pilot and a vent spill switch or lp gas listed unvented room heaters equipped with factory equipped oxygen depletion safety shut off systems may be installed in a used stationary manufactured home mobile home but not in sleeping quarters or bathrooms in the manufactured home mobile home when the installation of the heater is not prohibited by the appliance manufacturer and when the input rating of the room heater does. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that is the byproduct of combustion reactions. An oxygen depletion sensor ods on unvented gas heaters and fireplaces shuts off the gas flow if the oxygen level drops below 18 an indicator that not enough fresh air is getting into the house but the ods does not detect carbon monoxide or other hazardous emissions. There are propane and gas models available.
So do we and some more harmful gas fuel by products like carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. This colorless odorless gas is toxic to both humans and animals in high quantities. The fact of the matter is that vent free gas burning fireplaces and other other appliances definitely do emit elemental gasses into the home including carbon dioxide not a huge deal. In theory a gas fireplace without a vent should be safe because of how propane gas burns and there are no worrisome flames and extreme heat around your kids and pets.
